Okay, what the fuck. A “Peace” prize? What, is “Peace” a codeword for “we really want to give George Bush the middle finger, but there’s no other Nobel prize that we could plausibly give this guy, so we’ll give him this one and pretend that it’s for, I dunno, getting Old Lady Franklin’s cat out of a tree or something”.

The Nobel Peace prize is recognition of people and organizations which the Norwegian Storting (parliament) approves of. It’s politicians recognizing other politicians, using the prize to deliver a political message. Nothing surprising.

In a bygone era, the committee would often recognize people to piss off the Soviet Union. With that threat gone, they tweak other targets.

What I’m more amused by is the response to pressure that he re-join the presidential race – he won’t, he regards Hillary’s machine as unbeatable. Which has to have left Obama asking whether he’s chopped liver.

Well, one could argue that working to prevent the worst of global climate change now might prevent a slew of resource wars later, especially in developing nations….

Not that Al Gore isn’t a tard. He’s just less of a tard than ol’ G-Dubya.

What He Who Walks said. Attempting to prevent ecocide, billions of deaths, resource wars, and other wars caused by movement of people to the remaining viable ecosystems can, at least, provide cover for giving a “peace” award.

Besides, I can’t think of anyone else this year who’s brought about peace, anywhere.

Meanwhile, in lieu of the case in England where Gore’s movie was challenged in court, we have the following interesting assessment from the New Scientist
