Black Belt of the Year!

by wjw on March 9, 2009

Sometimes it pays just to show up.

How do you get that? Do you have to fight all the other black belts to the death?

Ty,
The way I saw it – Walter got this award for being such a good and even tempered guy and for handling all the harder stuff life sends him with a calm thoughtfulness. For keeping going even when it is difficult and doing it with style and kindness.
Congratulations Walter! You deserved this award.

Congratulations!

Being the world’s most unsporty person, I can’t even imagine winning an award for something sports related.

Patricia, thank you for the lovely compliments— even though I’d rather people thought I was the sole survivor of a cage fight.

Dave, I don’t do the sporty aspects of the art. I was too old when I began my training to do well at tournament stuff. I just try to show up as often as I can, learn as much as I can, and live the lessons as well as I can.

Perhaps you were kind and thoughtful while destroying all comers in the cage fight.

I am perfectly capable of holding these two contradictory images of you in my mind at the same time.

Of *course*, WJW would be ever so kind and merciful and dispatch his enemies quickly and as painlessly as possible before they could even work themselves up into an unfashionable and embarrassing sweat!

He is THAT much of a Gentleman!

Now if we can just get the AKKA to accept Hawaiian shirt tops as proper gei top wear, then he can also keep his stunning style in and out of the cage.
