Would this work as a jacket photo, do you think?

Well, the background is a little busy and the shadowed shirt has a wedge of total black.

Other than that, a happy WJ makes for a good pic. Is it the Turkish coffee or the raki?

I like it. And not just because I remember Istanbul fondly as one of my favorite cities in the world. You never know what the art director is going to say, but I’d rather see an author doing something characteristic, or in an interesting setting, than just another nicely composed portrait.

I think the text on the sign to the right will be too distracting for it to make a good jacket photo.

(Amazon decided which cover I got for This is not a game. Turned out to be the grey one. I like it and the book is the best new I’ve read this year.)

What message are you trying to convey with the picture. If you are trying to get the message out that the author is a world traveler who knows about the places he writes it is a very good cover. Boots on the ground and all that. If you are trying to let the potential reader know the author is a fun guy (No, I did not just call you a mushroom.) who can write a fun book, Bingo!

If you are trying to get the message out that you know about space ships and molecular scale von neumann machines that eat worlds, you score an epic fail. Great cover for This Is Not a Sequel.

You need to find a sign with a long word where only the first 5 characters are visible….”IWrit…”

=Is it the Turkish coffee or the raki?=

I think it’s the same smile that followed me throughout Asia Minor. It says, “Yee-hah! I’m right here in Asia Minor!”

I think I prefer this to the photo on the This is Not a Game cover, as that one makes you look too aloof, where as this one makes you more like the sort of guy who’d write a book like that.

I’d say ditch the sunglasses. You have an expressive set of eyes, and this just hides them.

Basically I need a new jacket photo, the other one dates from the turn of the century.

I thought I’d see if I could find something that wasn’t posed in a studio.
