PAE07CCThe first person to identify the object in the photo will win free downloads of all 11 Philip K Dick Award-nominated novels, now available at StoryBundle.

This thing looks like you might find it at IKEA, but you’d be wrong.

I’ve seen it before. I think it’s a baritone recorder, but it might be an ultramodern bassoon.

The image is Google-searchable, so it’s about who first thinks to try that.
I thought the mouthpiece looked like one and I’ve played woodwinds, so I *could* have come up with a correct guess after counting the holes.

And it’s Urban for the win!

Yes, it’s a sub-contrabass recorder, first patented in 1975 by Paetzold, and made out of plywood. The sound is similar to that of a didgeridoo.

Urban, send me your email and I’ll respond with a download code.

I would never have suspected it was a musical instrument.

Every time I look at it, it looks like a prop from some Star Wars movie. It just has that Lucasfilm *look*.
