I Am Cover’d

by wjw on May 12, 2017

Quillifer_comp_medBehold!  The Gregory Manchess cover for Quillifer, my next book, complete with blurb from Pulitzer Prize-winning author Junot Diaz!  How cool is that!

The protagonist’s expression turned out to be key for this, and according to my editor went through several versions.  “It was a goldilocks scenario of just too old, too war weary, not enough snark, way too much snark, then, oh no, now you’re embarrassing drunk uncle . . . “

But what they really needed was this guy.  Part Flashman, part James Bond.

The book’s just become available for pre-order, and can be in your hands the first week in October.

“Part Flashman, part James Bond.”

SOLD!

(Always on the lookout for suitable replacements for the Flashman books, now that Fraser is no longer with us. I keep meaning to write something about the various homage books out there, featuring Harry Flashman’s friends, relatives and descendants in his place.)

So how ARE the various Flashman homage series? I’ve been avoiding them because, y’know.

When Fraser died, my agent contacted the estate to see if he’d left anything behind that needed finishing, because I could do Fraser’s voice really well. But they saw “science fiction writer” and said that my efforts were not required.

Likewise, SOLD! Great cover and the blurb sounds suitably epic.

The pedant and longsword student in me is grumbling about the length of the hilt (c’mon, how’s he handling a blade that long one-handed?) but I’m giving him a few swift kicks.

So very glad the dry spell of the last few years is ending and more of your work is making it out to the world!

I thought Robert Brightwell’s FLASHMAN AND THE SEA WOLF, the first in a series about Harry’s uncle Thomas Flashman, was pretty good. Have several others in the series but haven’t read yet.

Others as yet unread: The “Flashback” series by Paul Moore. (Harry’s grandson, also named Harry, as a WWI aviator.)

“The Speedicut Papers” by Christopher Joll. (Starring General Flashman’s friend Jasper Speedicut.)

Wikipedia has a section on references to Flashman in other works.

And Goggling around, omg, on Archive of Our Own there’s even a Flashman/Game of Thrones mashup.

Sounds like my kind of book. Are you going to do a reading from it at WorldCon? I’m planning on attending many of your panels there.

I’m already casting him for the series! Who would you cast?

wjw May 21, 2017 at 11:24 pm

It would require an actor who’s young, British, versatile, and capable of snark. I’m probably the last person to ask about casting, but I’d thought that Jack O’Connell (from Unbroken) and Nicholas Hoult (from Mad Max) might work.
