Mighty Urho

st-urhoIt’s Saint Urho’s Day!

It is claimed by some that the serious drinking can only begin after donning the ritual green and purple.

I find the opposite is equally valid.

Another excuse to drink green beer. Hurrah for cultural appropriation.

Where would we be without cultural appropriation? Good lord, think of food without tomatoes, potatoes, and pizza.

That said, I doubt you’d get any self-respecting Finn to drink green beer.

Absolutely. Imagine the British being forced to eat fish without chips. Imagine the Italians being forced to eat spaghetti* without tomato sauce. Imagine the Indians being forced to eat — well ANYTHING — without chillies.

Self-respecting Finns might object to green beer but I don’t think most Americans would object to a beer, whatever the color.

*Which, by the way, was expropriated from China.

After walking through downtown Helsinki on a Friday night, I think Finns will drink anything.

You never met my Finnish American friend Randy. Lived in Cloquet. Of course he drank green beer. Sadly, he passed away and some of his ashes were scattered along the parade route last week, during the parade. When the parade was over, the beer drinking commenced.
