Two orphans, one inherited starship, and first contact as a business proposition.
Ubu Roy and his sister Beautiful Maria inherit a battered trading ship and a mountain of debt. The economy that once carried small operators has moved on without them, and the only way out is to take a desperate gamble.
What they find on the far side is an alien intelligence that wants to trade — and a negotiation in which every human advantage has to be invented from scratch.
