Epic

Clearly you were all so completely entranced by the Finnish music video I posted a couple days ago that, by now, you’re totally slavering  for the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala.

Which, thanks to Australian performance artist Scott Sandwich, you can now experience in eight minutes.

Eight minutes for a national epic!  How can you resist?

(And by the way, while I enjoyed the performance, it has to be admitted that Sandwich can’t pronounce Finnish words for shit.)

Thanks for KALEVALA in eight minutes. I must admit that all I understood were those not too badly pronounced names of the heroes . . .

But I am not surprised. I have noticed that even the younger generations of Finns (say, under forty or so) have learned to speak so quickly and indistinctly that I have difficulties to understand them.

Thanks. That was enjoyable.

Arno, my own experience with not quite being able to understand young people has to do with poor hearing. Not that my hearing was ever that great to begin with.

Of course I have to admit poor hearing, too, and it doesn’t help things. But in radio or TV where one can adjust the volume it doesn’t matter. The young generations do speak too quickly and carelessly, using slang and fashionable and needless words to expand the torrent of chatter.
