From Our Beleaguered Agents . . .

by wjw on June 15, 2020

A group of literary agents have released a plea to the public to “stop sending us your Covid novels!”

Turns out that there’s not a lot of drama inherent in a story where people stay at home, watch a lot of TV, and never meet anyone else.

That’s true. I mean Robinson Crusoe is about a guy who is stranded for years on a desert island. Other than celebrating Good Friday, what is exciting about that?

Off to read the old Isaac Asimov novel _The Naked Sun_…

Even Tom Hanks had Wilson.

Actually, when I was a kid I quite vividly recall watching “Robinson Crusoe on Mars”, starring Adam West, in the Saturday matinees at my local cinema. In retrospect it made no sense at all, but it sure *seemed* fun at the time. It had ‘air pills” and rocks that released oxygen when they were burnt (?). I’d give it 4 out of 5 stars, since it had Batman in it. Plus a monkey of some kind.

Thant’s true. Adam West in his most memorable performance. I loved that movie.

Oh, criminy, I hate to be a Martian party-pooper, but in Robinson Crusoe on Mars, Adam West had maybe five minutes of screen time (some of which was as a non-speaking dream apparition). The rocks that could be burned for both heat and oxygen were likened to Terrestrial coal, and the pills that would release oxygen into the human bloodstream were of advanced alien manufacture. Minimal Adam West appearance or not, I loved this Saturday Matinee movie as a boy and apparently I love it still. They say that the opening sequence for Star Trek (USS Enterprise rushing cross-screen with whooshing sounds) was influenced by the opening sequence here. It’s on YouTube.

This is kind of what I meant when I said it was his most memorable performance. He nailed that unresponsive, unspeaking, zombie bit.

Holy Martian, Batman!
